Character: Zelgadiss Graywords
Series/Fandom: Slayers
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: Twenty
Gender: Male
Species: Originally human, now a chimera (1/3 human, 1/3 golem, 1/3 lesser demon)
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Zelgadiss is a fairly tall man of average build, although most people don't notice this right away. This is because, as a chimera, he is rather prominently different from the rest of humanity. His skin is blue, with patches of dark gray stone here and there (most prominently around his left eye). His hair is a much lighter gray, verging on a pale purple, and as stiff as wire (he combs it with pliers occasionally, as a matter of fact). His entire body is made of stone, so he's extremely heavy. He generally dresses all in white, including a hooded cloak - occasionally with a mask over the lower part of his face.
Personality: Zelgadiss is very much a lone wolf, and very focused on searching for a cure for his condition, often to the exclusion of all else. He suffers (and a truer word was never used) from being the only sane man in the room; he's more down to earth than his companions, for the most part (in essence, he's the straight man - he'll still make wisecracks occasionally, though). He will, however, fiercely protect his friends. That doesn't stop him from complaining about the less serious trouble they get into, though.
And groaning about how much they eat.
Abilities/Weapons: Zel, in and of himself, is a highly accomplished swordsman and user of Shamanic magic - he has mastered the Spirit or Astral group of Shamanic spells, and is capable of casting the most powerful of these, Ra-Tilt, as well as several spells from other categories of Shamanic Magic. His magical power is enhanced by his demonic portion, which also makes him incredibly fast. His golem part gives him immense strength and skin so tough that he can literally stop a cannonball with his head (a blow that powerful will still knock him out and give him a lovely concussion, but it won't actually take his head off).
Weaknesses: Zel tends to focus on any opportunities for a cure that might be available, and has difficulties in any situation in which weight is a disadvantage, because he's got a lot of it (most things involving bodies of water fall into this category). He's also rather vulnerable emotionally on the subject of friends dying, or untrustworthy relatives.
History: For most of his young life, Zel grew up as a fairly average boy (considering the time period, anyway), although his parents didn't seem to be around, so he tended to look to his great-grandfather, a famous sorcerer by the name of Rezo the Red Priest. One day, when he was in his late teens, he rather foolishly went to Rezo, promising to aid the mage in a task if Rezo would grant him power. Rezo, renowned for working good all across the world, had been corrupted by the fragment of the mazoku lord Ruby-Eye Shabranigdo that was bound within his eyes, and transformed Zelgadiss into a chimera as the most direct route to giving him the power he seeks.
For a time, Zelgadiss worked for Rezo, aiding him in his search for the Philosopher's Stone, which Rezo hoped would amplify his (Rezo's) magic to the point that he could cure his own blindness. However, the Philosopher's Stone happened to be in the hands of the self-styled "beautiful, genius sorceress" Lina Inverse. After attempting to buy the item, Zel kidnaps Lina with the aid of his friends Zolf and Rodimus and the wolf-troll Dilgear. A change of heart leads to him rescuing Lina and fighting off Dilgear, who, unlike the two humans, refused to switch sides. The Philosopher's Stone, despite the best efforts of Zelgadiss, Lina, and her companion Gourry Gabriev, falls into Rezo's hands, releasing the fragment of Ruby-Eye, which kills Zolf and Rodimus. After a battle in which all three companions nearly die, Ruby-Eye is defeated and Zel takes his leave to search for a way to make him human again.
He rejoins the two, with the addition of Amelia wil Tesla Seyruun, in the city of Sairaag, where Rezo is rumored to live again. The copy of Rezo awakens and consumes the power of the demon beast Zanaffar, and is only defeated by the power of the Blessed Blade. Zelgadiss once again heads off in search of a cure.
He meets up with them again in a small where he hopes to obtain a copy of the Clair Bible, which he believes to contain his cure. This doesn't work out so well when the palace is destroyed. He travels with Lina, Gourry, and Amelia around the continent, always looking for a cure, led on by the trickster Xelloss and pursued by the princess of the ravaged kingdom, Martina (who has this tendency to fall madly in love with anyone male in the vicinity). Eventually, he takes part in the battle against the powerful mazoku called Hellmaster Phibrizo, where (again) they nearly die. He takes his leave once again, but it seems he just can't get away; he meets them again in Seyruun, hoping to find a cure in the lands that were opened by Phibrizo's defeat. He eventually aids in the destruction of the demon lord Dark Star on another world, and tries this whole leaving thing once more. He spends some time wandering in search of a cure until he's brought to Econtra.
